Most NFL Wins on the Road

The Game Before the Money Radio Show reviewed the most consecutive road wins by an NFL team. The show airs on the SportsMap Radio Network on Saturday mornings at 11 am Eastern, 8 Pacific and is hosted by football historian Jackson Michael.

Most Consecutive Road Wins by NFL Team

What do you think the NFL record for most consecutive road victories by a team is? Ten? Maybe twelve? The record is eighteen!

The San Francisco 49ers, between the 1988 and 1990 seasons, won 18 straight games on the road. Unbelievable. The streak started with a bang, a 48 – 10 win over the San Diego Chargers in November of 1988.

San Francisco lost their two previous road games, both by only one point. So, the streak could have started a couple of games early if not for two one-point losses!

49ers Undefeated on the Road

San Francisco went through the entire 1989 and 1990 seasons undefeated on the road! Both Bill Walsh and George Seifert were the 49ers head coach during the streak. Joe Montana took the majority of the snaps at quarterback during the streak, although both Steve Young and Steve Bono also made appearances at quarterback for the 49ers.

Their 18 consecutive road wins including a playoff win over the Chicago Bears in 1988.

The 49ers started the 1989 NFL regular season with five out of their first six games on the road! They won all five of those road games and, oddly, lost the only home game in that stretch. San Francisco won their first three games in 1989, all on the road, and then lost at home to the Rams.

The 49ers next won back-to-back games on the road. San Francisco finished 14-2 that year and won the Super Bowl over the Denver Broncos.

The 49ers road win streak ended Week 1 of the 1991 season on Monday Night Football as the New York Giants Matt Bahr kicked a field goal with 5 seconds left in the game to give the Giants a 16-14 victory at Giants Stadium.
